IPVanish vs NordVPN: Unlimited Devices vs Trust Record
IPVanish vs NordVPN is a matchup where the honest answer leans one way for most people. The short version: NordVPN wins on trust record, audit cadence and features, while IPVanish's main draw is unlimited devices and a straightforward US-based service. IPVanish is a capable VPN today, but it carries a history NordVPN doesn't, and for a privacy tool that history is fair to weigh.
We build this from published audits and documented facts, not speed tests we ran. The relevant history: in 2016, under earlier ownership, IPVanish handed connection logs to US authorities despite a no-logs claim — disclosed publicly in 2018. The company has since been re-audited (Leviathan, most recently in 2025), but the episode is a real trust data point, and we won't pretend otherwise.

Trust and track record
This is the round that defines the matchup, and NordVPN wins it. IPVanish's 2016 handover of connection logs — timestamps and a real IP address — to US authorities directly contradicted its no-logs marketing at the time, and only came to light in 2018. New ownership (Ziff Davis, which also owns PCMag and CNET) and a fresh Leviathan audit in 2025 have followed, but a broken no-logs promise is exactly the kind of event a privacy buyer should factor in.
NordVPN has no comparable incident and has instead built a long, repeated audit history. That doesn't make IPVanish untrustworthy today, but trust in this category is cumulative, and one provider is starting from a clean sheet while the other is rebuilding. On the single most important axis for a privacy tool, the edge is Nord's.
Privacy and jurisdiction
NordVPN wins here too. It is based in Panama, outside the 14 Eyes intelligence alliances, while IPVanish operates from the United States — a founding 5 Eyes member. Neither is required to retain usage logs, but a US base means US legal process, which some threat models specifically try to avoid.
Both are audited: NordVPN's sixth no-logs assessment by Deloitte in December 2025, IPVanish's by Leviathan re-run in 2025. NordVPN also runs RAM-only servers across its fleet; IPVanish does not clearly document the same. Add it up and the privacy round goes to Nord on jurisdiction, infrastructure and audit frequency.
Devices and value
This is IPVanish's clear win. It allows unlimited simultaneous connections against NordVPN's 10, so a device-heavy household can cover everything on one plan — and its pricing is competitive, particularly in the first term. If your single biggest need is protecting many devices cheaply, IPVanish makes a real case.
Ten devices covers most people, so the unlimited advantage matters mainly at scale. Weigh it honestly against the trust and feature gaps: unlimited connections are useful, but they don't offset a jurisdiction and history difference if privacy is your actual priority. For a big, low-stakes household setup, though, IPVanish is efficient.
Features and apps
NordVPN wins on breadth. Threat Protection blocks trackers and malicious domains, Meshnet links your own devices, and Double VPN and obfuscated servers cover higher-threat use — a genuinely deep toolbox. IPVanish keeps a solid, functional core (WireGuard, kill switch, leak protection) but doesn't match Nord's range of extras.
IPVanish's simplicity is not a criticism for everyone — some people want a VPN that connects and gets out of the way, and its apps do that cleanly across platforms. But if you value tools that reduce other subscriptions (Nord's tracker and malware blocking, for instance) or that let you build a small private network, NordVPN's feature depth is a concrete reason to pay a little more.
Speed, in honest terms
Both ship WireGuard, so expect comparable real-world speed, and we publish no benchmarks. NordVPN's NordLynx routinely tops independent charts and its larger network reduces congestion; IPVanish is quick on a nearby server. As always, distance and load matter more than the badge, and neither is likely to bottleneck a normal connection.
Price and plans
Both offer a 30-day money-back guarantee and discount heavily up front. IPVanish is often cheaper in the first term and adds unlimited devices; NordVPN costs a little more but brings the trust record, RAM-only servers and features. Check the renewal rate on either before committing, and use the guarantee to trial your pick.
Weigh the price honestly against the trust round above. IPVanish's first-term discount plus unlimited devices can look like the better deal on a spreadsheet, but for a privacy tool the value of a clean jurisdiction, RAM-only servers and no logging incident is real even if it doesn't show up as a line item. Pay for what your threat model actually needs.
IPVanish vs NordVPN: the verdict
Take NordVPN if trust, jurisdiction, audits and features matter most — which, for a privacy tool, they usually should; take IPVanish if unlimited devices on a budget is your overriding need and its history doesn't put you off. You can start with IPVanish or NordVPN (affiliate links, disclosed — and the 2016 caveat above stands regardless of them).
