Surfshark vs NordVPN (2026): Same Owners, Different Deal

Posted Sep 21, 2026

Surfshark vs NordVPN comes down to devices and depth. Surfshark is the cheaper buy and puts no cap on devices; NordVPN costs more, allows 10 devices and brings the longer no-logs audit record plus more tools. Pick Surfshark for a big household on a budget, NordVPN if you want the deepest feature set and can live with its renewal price. They are not rivals in the usual sense: the two companies merged in 2022 under a shared holding company, though both brands still run separately.

Every price and spec below was re-read on the providers' own pages on 20 October 2026 and carries that date. We ran no speed tests, and where a fact could not be confirmed on a provider's own pages that day, we leave it out or say so plainly rather than repeat what other reviews claim.

The verdict, round by round

Surfshark takes the rounds that cost money: devices, renewal price and price per device. NordVPN takes the rounds that build trust over time: the length of its no-logs audit history and the breadth of its tools. Protocols and money-back terms end level. If you are covering one or two people on a few devices, the decision is close and the price gap is the tiebreaker. If you are covering a whole house, Surfshark's unlimited devices settle it.

A note on what we did not score. Server counts appear in every competing review and disagree in most of them, because they are marketing figures that change monthly and are measured differently by each company. Surfshark's own pages say 4,500+ servers in 100 countries. NordVPN's own servers page showed no total when we read it on 20 October 2026, so we print none, and we would not pick between these two on server count anyway.

Same parent company: what it means

Nord Security and Surfshark announced their merger on 2 February 2022 and said both brands would continue to operate independently. Today, Nord Security's own brand list does not include Surfshark, so the accurate description is two companies merged under a shared holding company, not Surfshark as a Nord product. Surfshark B.V. is registered in Amsterdam; NordVPN's operating company, nordvpn S.A., is registered in Panama City.

What that means for you is narrower than most reviews suggest. It does not mean your Surfshark traffic flows through NordVPN's servers; each runs its own network and its own audits. It does mean the ultimate owners are the same people, so if your reason for picking one over the other is to spread trust across unrelated companies, this pairing does not do that. For a genuinely separate owner, compare Proton VPN vs NordVPN or look at Mullvad, which runs no affiliate programme.

It also explains why the two feel similar in places. Both lean on WireGuard for speed, both offer a 30-day refund, both run long-term plans that renew into a yearly term at a higher price. Where they differ is in how each brand chose to package and price that base, which is where the rest of this matchup is decided.

Spec table, read-dated

Here are the specs that most often disagree between ranking pages, each with the date and the source we read. Where a source would not load, the cell says so.

Two corrections to what you will read elsewhere. First, NordVPN's device limit is 10, according to its own support article, which does not split the limit by plan; reviews quoting 6 are out of date. Second, NordVPN no longer has a separate P2P server list: its support pages say file sharing works on all standard servers, so any guide telling you to pick a P2P server in the app is describing an older version.

Audits and incidents

NordVPN has the longer paper trail. Its own pages say its no-logs policy has been checked six times: by PwC in 2018 and 2020, then by Deloitte in 2022, 2023 and 2024, and again from 10 November to 12 December 2025. That sixth engagement was announced on 3 February 2026. Surfshark's Trust Center lists two Deloitte no-logs reports, from 2023 and 2025, the second announced on 16 June 2025 and covering its standard, static and multiport servers.

NordVPN: PwC no-logs 2018 and 2020, Finnish server breach in 2018 disclosed in October 2019, Deloitte no-logs 2022, 2023, 2024 and 2025.

Surfshark has more security audits of other kinds, and those should not be confused with no-logs evidence. Its Trust Center lists Cure53 reviews of its browser extensions (2018) and infrastructure (2021), SecuRing reviews of its apps (2025) and infrastructure (completed December 2025), a 2026 Cure53 review of its infrastructure and its Dausos protocol, and an independent Mobile App Security Assessment (MASA) of its Android app. Those test whether systems can be broken into, not whether they keep logs.

NordVPN carries the one serious incident in this matchup. In March 2018, a server in a rented Finnish data centre was accessed through an insecure remote-management system the data-centre provider had left in place, and an expired internal private key was exposed. TechCrunch reported it on 21 October 2019. NordVPN says the leaked key gave no way into traffic on its other servers, and that the breached machine kept no user activity logs. The six audits since then are partly NordVPN's answer to that episode.

3-year cost including renewal

Both providers sell 2-year plans that bill 27 months up front and then renew into a 1-year term at a higher price. On 20 October 2026, Surfshark Starter cost $67.23 for the first 27 months ($2.49 a month) and renews at $79 a year. Surfshark was running a Black Friday offer that put One at the same $67.23, renewing at $99, and One+ at $107.73, renewing at $119. On NordVPN's side, the renewal table (last updated 10 June 2026) charges Basic $139.08 a year and Complete $219.48, while the US pricing page offered new buyers Basic at $3.49 a month ($94.23 for 27 months) and, when re-read on 21 October 2026, Complete at $3.99 ($107.73).

Bar chart of the cost of 39 months on each 2-year plan, first bill plus one renewal year: Surfshark Starter $146.23, Surfshark One $166.23, Surfshark One+ $226.73, NordVPN Basic $233.31 and NordVPN Complete $327.21, all read on 21 October 2026.

Over that 39-month window, Surfshark Starter costs $146.23 and NordVPN Basic $233.31, a gap of $87.08 for the cheapest plan on each side. The gap at renewal alone is $60.08 a year. At the offer prices we read, even Surfshark's top tier undercuts NordVPN's cheapest plan: One+ comes to $226.73 against $233.31 for Basic, $6.58 less, and it bundles Surfshark's antivirus, breach alerts and identity tools. Offer prices move often, so check both before you pay.

Both companies add sales tax on top, and NordVPN reserves the right to A/B-test renewal prices, with an email warning before any change. Both also renew automatically. For more on the mechanics, read our NordVPN vs ExpressVPN matchup, which deals with the same renewal problem at a higher price point.

Devices and households

This round is the simplest to call. Surfshark allows unlimited simultaneous connections on every paid plan, although its 7-day free trial is limited to 3 devices. NordVPN allows 10 per account and counts a router as one, so a router install can protect every device behind it for a single slot. For a couple with phones, laptops and a TV, 10 is plenty. For a shared house, a family with teenagers, or someone who protects every gadget, Surfshark removes the arithmetic.

Smart TVs are close. Both have Apple TV apps, which need tvOS 17 or later, and Surfshark says its Fire TV app also runs on Amazon's newer Vega OS devices; NordVPN's Fire TV page says nothing about Vega OS. On a Mac, NordVPN offers its app both as a download from its website and through the Mac App Store, and its website download page lists extras such as an app-level kill switch and custom DNS. On Linux, Surfshark offers Snap, Flatpak and .deb packages but notes that the Flatpak version has no kill switch; NordVPN's Linux app has a GUI, installs as a Snap or through a script for Debian, Ubuntu and Fedora systems, and its source code is public.

Features and protocols

NordVPN has more moving parts. Besides NordLynx, its WireGuard-based protocol, it now offers NordWhisper, its protocol for networks that block VPNs. Its obfuscated servers have moved from OpenVPN to NordWhisper, so older guides that tell you to switch to OpenVPN for obfuscation are out of date. Post-quantum encryption is available on seven platforms but you have to switch it on, and it works only with NordLynx. Meshnet, which links your own devices into a private network, is NordVPN's most distinctive extra.

Surfshark's toolkit leans toward convenience. Its obfuscation switches on automatically when you choose OpenVPN, its NoBorders mode is meant for networks that restrict VPNs, and post-quantum protection is on by default when you pick WireGuard in its apps. CleanWeb blocks ads and trackers, and the One and One+ bundles add antivirus, breach alerts and identity tools. Surfshark has also built its own Dausos protocol, which Cure53 reviewed in 2026; Surfshark says it is available on macOS so far.

Streaming, torrenting, gaming

For torrenting, NordVPN's position is clear in its support pages: P2P is allowed on all its standard servers, but those servers offer no port forwarding, because many customers share each one; only its paid Dedicated Server add-on supports it. If your torrent client needs an open incoming port, neither of these is the specialist; Private Internet Access offers port forwarding on most of its non-US server locations. For streaming, neither provider guarantees access to any particular library, and services such as BBC iPlayer say they block VPN connections when they detect them.

For gaming, the provider matters less than the game's rules. Steam's subscriber agreement bans using IP proxying or other methods to disguise where you live, so read your game's own terms before you connect through another country. Either VPN will connect you; neither makes a ban-risky use safe. One hard limit: NordVPN's own support pages say its apps are fully blocked in China, so do not buy it for a trip there.

Edge cases

  • You already own one of them. Moving from one of these two brands to the other does not change who ultimately owns the company. If ownership is your concern, compare with an unrelated provider instead.
  • You need more than 10 devices but want NordVPN. Install it on your router: NordVPN counts the router as one device while it covers everything connected to it.
  • You are on a 1-month plan. Surfshark's monthly plans renew at $18.95 (Starter), $19.95 (One) and $22.85 (One+), per its renewal-price page on 21 October 2026. That is more than seven times the $2.49 a month of Surfshark's 2-year Starter offer.
  • You want a trial without a card. Neither offers one: NordVPN's web trial needs a card or PayPal, and Surfshark's accepts card, PayPal or Apple Pay.

Surfshark vs NordVPN: the verdict

Choose Surfshark if you want unlimited devices and the lower renewal: $79 a year on Starter, read 20 October 2026. Choose NordVPN if you want six independent no-logs engagements, Meshnet, NordWhisper and an open-source Linux client, and accept $139.08 a year at renewal on Basic. Both refund within 30 days, so test the one you lean toward on your own devices. Start with Surfshark or NordVPN (affiliate links, disclosed; commissions never move a verdict).
