Mullvad vs NordVPN: Privacy Purist vs the Market Leader
Mullvad vs NordVPN is the clearest 'privacy purist versus mainstream champion' matchup in the category — and one where we'll happily recommend the option that pays us nothing. The short answer: Mullvad wins for anonymity and open-source verifiability, while NordVPN wins for features, device count, speed and streaming. They're built for genuinely different priorities, so the 'better' one depends entirely on why you want a VPN.
A disclosure that's central to this matchup: Mullvad runs no affiliate program, so there is no commission for us in recommending it — which is exactly why we can. NordVPN does pay a commission through the link below. Nothing about that changes the verdict; if anything, it's the point of an independent desk.

Privacy and anonymity
This is where the two diverge most. Mullvad issues a random account number instead of an email address, accepts cash sent in the post, and holds no personal data to hand over — a model that survived a 2023 Swedish police search that reportedly seized nothing because there was nothing on disk. NordVPN requires an email and, while it keeps no usage logs, it operates a more conventional account system.
On jurisdiction the roles flip: NordVPN's Panama base sits outside the 14 Eyes alliances, while Mullvad is in Sweden, a 14 Eyes member. Mullvad's answer is that jurisdiction matters less when you hold no user data to compel. If your priority is minimising what any company knows about you in the first place, Mullvad's whole design is built around that goal.
Verifiability and audits
Both take auditing seriously, and this round is a draw. Mullvad publishes 100% open-source apps and commissions repeated independent security reviews (including work by X41 and Assured across 2025–26); NordVPN's sixth no-logs assessment was completed by Deloitte in December 2025 but its apps remain closed-source.
The philosophical difference is trust versus verification. NordVPN asks you to trust a Big Four audit; Mullvad lets you — or anyone — read the code and check the claims. For most users an audit is plenty; for those who want the strongest possible assurances, open source is the higher bar, and Mullvad clears it.
Features and streaming
NordVPN wins comfortably here, by design. Mullvad deliberately keeps its app minimal — it is a privacy tool, not a streaming unblocker or a feature suite, and it makes no strong streaming promises. NordVPN offers reliable access to the major libraries, SmartDNS, Threat Protection, Meshnet and Double VPN.
So if you want one subscription that streams, blocks trackers and links your devices, Nord is the obvious choice. If you want a lean, fast, private tunnel and nothing you didn't ask for, Mullvad's minimalism is a feature, not a shortcoming — just be clear which of those two people you are before buying.
Protocols and speed
Both are WireGuard-first and fast, and we publish no benchmarks of our own. Mullvad's differentiator is DAITA (Defence Against AI-guided Traffic Analysis), which adds cover traffic to resist sophisticated pattern analysis — a real privacy feature rather than a speed one. NordVPN's NordLynx is consistently among the quickest options in independent testing. Expect both to feel fast on a normal connection.
Note that DAITA deliberately trades a little bandwidth for privacy — the cover traffic that defeats analysis also uses data — so Mullvad's fastest raw numbers come with it off. That's the right trade for its audience. NordVPN, aimed at the mainstream, optimises purely for speed and reach. It's another way the two providers reveal who they're built for: Mullvad protects, Nord performs, and both do their chosen job well.
Pricing and devices
NordVPN allows 10 devices to Mullvad's 5, so larger setups favour Nord. On price, Mullvad charges a flat €5 per month with no discounts, tiers or countdown timers — you always know the real cost. NordVPN is cheaper on a deeply discounted long plan but pricier at renewal, so the 'who's cheaper' answer depends on the term and the promo of the day.
Mullvad's refusal to discount is a deliberate anti-dark-pattern stance that some people value as much as any feature. NordVPN's 30-day guarantee lets you trial it risk-free. If predictable, honest pricing appeals to you, that alone may settle this matchup in Mullvad's favour.
Mullvad vs NordVPN: the verdict
Take Mullvad if anonymity, open source and flat pricing are what you're really buying; take NordVPN if you want a full-featured mainstream VPN that also streams. There's no affiliate link for Mullvad here because it runs no program — that's rather the point — so you'd sign up directly on its own site. For NordVPN you can start via NordVPN (an affiliate link, disclosed; it doesn't change our recommendation of Mullvad above).
